Sextortion Amongst Teens
Smartphone ownership amongst teens has risen dramatically in the past few years. Reportedly over 50% of 11-year old’s own one, and increases to over 80% at age 14.
The smartphone has introduced a new paradigm in the parent-child relationship where many arguments and struggles involve the child’s smartphone use.
On the one hand, the smartphone has become central to the modern teen’s existence. Their whole world takes place on that device, as dramatic as that may sound. The smartphone is where they interact with friends through messaging and social media, watch videos and play games.
Not All Positive
The flip side to this is that all the endless possibilities that smartphones bring are, unfortunately, not all positive. The smartphone has brought along unwanted consequences such as higher levels of stress and anxiety, cyberbullying, and sextortion.
Having heard numerous horrifying stories about sexting leading to sextortion, we have taken a particular interest in finding a solution. For this purpose, we have founded Nuno.
The verdict is still far from out when it comes to tackling these issues; however, there is a consensus that something needs to be done. A recent survey published Internetmatters.org added an exclamation point to that statement by reporting that 20% of school children who have sent sexts said they were pressured or blackmailed into doing so.
Finding A Solution
At Nuno, we’re committed to providing safeguarding solutions for Sexting. We acknowledge the topic’s delicacy and work together with subject matter experts to develop appropriate solutions for different age groups and account for cultural differences.
With our first MVP, we tackle the capturing and subsequent sharing of sexual implicit material. We offer a fully functioning mobile camera that detects indecent material in real-time. When the camera detects something inappropriate such as exposed genitalia (m/f), it automatically blurs those parts and makes it impossible to capture the image. This way, there is no possibility for storing the image and sharing it with others.
Our short term objective is to gather as much feedback from users as possible. User feedback will help us design the roadmap for future improvements as well as clarify the added value. If you want to help us in our mission to stop sextortion please consider becoming a beta user and sign up!
